In a significant milestone, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has initiated the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of civilian aircraft at its facility in Ozar, Nashik—a first for the defence public sector undertaking (PSU). The facility, traditionally dedicated to overhauling military aircraft like the Su-30MKI, has now expanded its operations to include the Airbus A320 family.
Last month, HAL successfully completed and delivered its first overhauled A320 Neo, owned by IndiGo, marking the start of its civilian MRO journey. Additionally, two Embraer aircraft from another private airline are currently under overhaul at the Nashik facility, with completion expected by the end of April 2025.
The move follows HAL’s strategic partnership with Airbus in November 2023, to establish a certified ‘C’-Check facility at Nashik. This initiative adheres to both DGCA and EASA safety and quality standards. Airbus has played an active role by providing consultancy services, tooling support, and technical literature, along with conducting gap assessments and upskilling workshops for the HAL team.
Sources within HAL confirmed that skilling programs have also been launched, including BAMEC certification and Level-III A320 type training in collaboration with IndiGo. Upon receiving DGCA clearance, HAL successfully completed the MRO of the A320 Neo and returned the aircraft in record time in March 2025.
Describing this as a breakthrough for Nashik's industrial ecosystem, Manish Rawal, Vice-President of the Nashik Industries & Manufacturers’ Association (NIMA) and Chair of its Aviation Committee, said,
“This development opens new business avenues for local vendors in the aviation spare parts sector and is set to create employment opportunities. HAL’s entry into civilian aviation maintenance is a welcome and progressive move.”

This transition not only diversifies HAL’s capabilities but also positions Nashik as an emerging hub for civil aviation services.
